What happens if you already took a defensive driving course?
Any time you receive a traffic ticket, you face the prospect of accumulating violations on your driving record.
After accumulating four or more moving violations in 12 months or seven or more within 24 months, you may have your license suspended by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). You may also face a license suspension for more serious traffic offenses, such as DWI or causing a traffic collision while driving without insurance.
You are generally allowed to take a defensive driving course every year which will get rid of your traffic ticket and its complications.
However, if you are a CDL (commercial driver license) holder, you will not be eligible nor will you be eligible if you have already taken that course for some other violation in the past year.
Other factors that can disqualify you for such a course include driving without insurance, speeding at 95 mph or more, speeding at or over 25 mph above the posted limit, hit and run, speeding or violations in construction zones, and passing a school bus that is stopped or has its red lights flashing.
In some cases, you may have already used your defensive driving course option or you may be facing the suspension of your license due to an accumulation of too many violations.
